“You write reviews don’t you… You’ve got your work cut out with this lot!” This impromptu statement from a bloke in the audience pretty much sums up last night. I know for a fact that there was not a single person who came last night who wasn’t blown away by the immense 14 piece band that is “Beats & Pieces”.
From the word go with the mind-blowing diminished introduction we all knew it was gonna be a good night. It was loud enough to rock the boat but not so loud as to scare us away; the balance was simply astonishing and it really did them justice. Their stage presence was relaxed and totally in control and I haven’t even begun to drool over their music yet …!
Textured, incredibly well written pieces which were fantastically tight. Just as you started to lay back and enjoy the groove, the band stood up and metaphorically kicked you in the face with a new idea. The brass was squeaky clean, the saxes were amazing and the rhythm was spot on. I really don’t have anything bad to say about them so I am going to keep it short and sweet. Their album “ Big Ideas” is great production and one which I thoroughly recommend; contemporary big band music at its best.
