One of the massive things for Lancaster Jazz Festival is to not just develop a sustainable annual festival, but to back this up with a year round programme of supported events. It was the very first thing that was decided upon in the very first public meeting in the tiny cinema at The Gregson back in 2012. To try make sure that jazz gigs in Lancaster aren't limited to pubs or very risky nights in the back room of the Gregson. It’s quite tricky – especially for an organisation that doesn’t have its own venue. And, like you’d expect, over the last five years we’ve had some awesome nights and some less so. Now, as we move into year six, we're upping the anti on our year round programming...
How to build?
We’ve been working with More Music for ages now – they were out very first partners – and they have a beautiful venue at The Hothouse and recently they approached us to get more hands on with their jazz programming so that’s one way (work with these amazing people is another… news coming soon...), and a greater focus on our year round programming tying in with the festival through artists in residence, partnership work and workshops is some more. It’s gonna get really exciting.
"So who should we book?
"CAN WE HAVE LET SPIN?
Our first gig in 2016 - Possibly our favourite band of the moment (our other is hopefully our headliner for 2016…fingers crossed). Let Spin play awesome (massive) grooves with incredible solos, kind of Donny McCaslin meets a punk Pharoah Sanders. Completely no nonsense and wonderful music.
They played a self promoted gig at The Gregson last year which I couldn’t get to where they played like “vengeful gods” (Ben McCabe). Its going to be lovely.
