Well… All I can say is that if you weren’t there, sweating it out in The Round last night, where the hell were you?
It’s an honour to be writing a review of this lot, I mean, these guys have been at the Montreux Jazz Festival and on The Jools Holland Show! YESTERDAY THEY WERE IN LANCASTER ARGH! I have never seen a group of musicians so virtuosic individually and at the same time totally immersed in each other’s heads. All it took was the nod of his head and they all burst into the next section.
It was a true delight to watch them, the opinion shared by everyone in the room as their bouncy presences bundled up onto the stage and kept the audience smiling for the duration. Bright, chirpy and bouncy pieces coupled with sombre ones made for an emotional night; if Neil explained the inspiration behind a piece before he played it, I could immediately think as they began to play it “YES, this sounds like THAT mood.” A very rare occasion.
Punchy, ballsy piano riffs which developed into booming anthems in time signatures I couldn’t fathom out no matter how hard I tried.
“ All drummers should take a pew and watch Evan,” said a musician in the audience. He wasn’t over-powering; he was spot on in every way. The same is true for the whole band; they are advocates of “that’s the way it’s done”.
… And may I just say, what a glorious beard you have Mr Rex Horen.
