The most exciting saxophonist, composer and ensemble leader in the UK right now (and mean baritone saxophonist), Cath Roberts. With a brand new, made especially for LancasterJazz16, ensemble / set / performance in the beautiful and intimate space that is The Round Theatre at The Dukes.
Way back, pre-LancasterJazz15, we got thinking about our headline moment and what it means, why do we do it and what does it bring to the festival? As a festival we want to support emerging artists and support new ideas, create inspiring events whilst allowing artists to take risks, and produce high quality jazz events that you won’t see anywhere else. How could we apply this to our headline moment where, so far, we’ve bought in established names to focus the festival? Wouldn’t it be amazing if instead we made something unique and really special, bringing our artist development aims into every programming strand? Following the massive success of having Seth Bennett as an artist in residence in 2015 the development of that strand seemed obvious. Why not give the main focus of the festival over to our artist in residence? Surely that would be amazing / scary / produce something wonderful?
It’s no exaggeration to say that we’re mega excited about this - it’s going to be really amazing but also it’s the first time we’ve commissioned something on this scale and the amount of work involved is epic. But, it’s truly going to be something else. Cath is a phenomenal artist who has assembled a world class 10-piece ensemble from around Europe to make this happen, and, after a temporary move to The Rake Theatre last year, we’re back home in the gorgeous Round Theatre at The Dukes. Do not miss this.
