“One to watch” - The Guardian
“A studious attempt to explore extremes of intensity, with fat dollops of riffage and seething free-jazz acting as corridors to near-silent interludes of close listening and miniature gestures” - Jazzwise
A specially commissioned, one-off headline event from our 2016 Artist in Residence, Cath Roberts.
Cath is arguably the most exciting saxophonist, composer and large-ensemble leader in the UK right now and she, along with her group Word of Moth, blew us all away at last years festival closer.
In a specially curated, acoustic set the music will explore the intersection of composition and improvisation, ranging across diverse musical territories from fiery free jazz, to minimal textures, beautiful melodic moments and some very deep grooves.
At the core of the ensemble will be Cath’s quintet Sloth Racket, which features some of the UK’s finest improvisers: Anton Hunter (guitar), Sam Andreae (tenor saxophone), Seth Bennett (bass) and Johnny Hunter (drums). The line-up will be augmented by an exciting selection of special guests sourced from around Europe and the resulting concert is certain to be another very special Lancaster Jazz Festival experience in the Round.
