John Pope double bass / Jamie Stockbridge alto saxophone / Faye MacCalman tenor saxophone, clarinet / Graham Hardy trumpet / Johnny Hunter drums
A chordless all-star lineup of northern musicians, the John Pope Quintet draws on the history of 60s avant jazz and hard bop, but with a modern sensibility grounded in the sounds of today’s European jazz scene. Open- hearted, quirky compositions and dynamic anything-goes improvisation, played with a hard- swinging groove and referencing everybody from Ornette Coleman to Tom Waits and Mingus to the Pixies. The John Pope Quintet kicks up a joyful racket full of rewards for the adventurous listener.
