It will be 24 months come September since the last Lancaster Jazz Festival in 2019, a fantastic event that saw 44 performances all across the city, from over 200 artists and over 5000 of you lovely people in the audience to watch and support them.
We took the decision early last year to cancel the 2020 festival, and with restrictions continuing to be in place it doesn't feel like the right time to be organising the next one quite yet. Despite the loss we have felt from that decision, we've been working hard behind the scenes to develop the festival and team so we can come back stronger than ever for our 10th anniversary in 2022. We've also launched our series of micro-comissions, if you haven't seen the amazing compositions from Ulita and Moss Freed, they are both spectacular!
That being said, we miss music and gigs and bringing everyone together, and although it doesn't seem feasible to put on a full festival, we've decided we just can't wait any longer to bring some live jazz to Lancaster, so we are partnering up with our friends at Kanteena, to do a one day Lancaster Jazz Festival 'Takeover' on Saturday 11th September.
We're going to have plenty of bands, artists, DJs, and you can expect indoor and outdoor gigs - recreating the festival vibe as much as we can!
Kanteena have worked really hard through all the ongoing restrictions to stay open in a covid secure and safe way, we've already done some site visits and we feel confident that in line with the rules in place in September, we can work with them to ensure that a safe event can go ahead in this space. Kanteena offers both indoor and outdoor seating areas, and the two main stages are all on one level with step free access, so it's accessible and flexible to everyone's needs - plus they have some great beers and burgers too!
As a festival, we're committed to bringing our audiences the most exciting cutting edge jazz, and so we will host an open call for artists who are interested in coming to play! We look forward to hearing some great music - find out more and apply.
It goes without saying that we wouldn't be able to deliver our festival or events without the wonderful volunteers who give up there time to help, so if you are based in Lancaster and interested in getting involved before or during the event, please drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
For now, the only thing left to say is - add the 11th September firmly in the diary - and we look forward to seeing you there! Until then, stay safe and speak soon.
