Emma Johnson’s Gravy Boat – Northern Flame

Lancaster Library Duration: 60 minutes Get Tickets

Evolve Commission Premiere

Emma Johnson returns to Lancaster Jazz Festival with Gravy Boat to perform Northern Flame – a collection of new music inspired by people and places in the North of England, specifically focused on the resilience and strength of women throughout the history of Lancashire.

Hailed as “one of the most exciting forces in contemporary jazz”, Gravy Boat’s music is cinematic, melodic and evocative, with their performances including stories, music and “characteristically Northern warmth and charm.” (Ian Mann)

Johnson’s writing combines strong melodies with improvised sections that give each member of the group space to shine.

One of our Lancaster Jazz Festival Evolve Commissions, this premiere will be the band’s first performance of new music since the release of their debut album ‘Worry Not’ in July 2021.
