New Music Commission

Lancaster Jazz Festival is looking to commission an artist to create a new piece of repertoire for young musicians. Lancaster Jazz Festival includes a Youth Jazz Night at every festival and this new piece would be workshopped and performed as part of this event at the 2020 festival.

We want to leave as much room as possible for your creative process, there is no set form or style, the piece should mean something to you and inspire and develop young musicians at various stages of their music making.

The new piece should be scalable, suitable for small ensemble, large ensemble, big band and jazz orchestra.

The musician(s) selected for this piece should be available for a performance at the festival on Thursday 10th September and for various dates in advance of this to workshop with local groups.

The criteria are very simple:

  • Artists are to create a piece of original music between 6-12 minutes long to be performed at Lancaster Jazz Festival in September 2020.
  • The piece will be designed to inspire young musicians.
  • The piece and guidelines will be made available publicly following the performance to music hubs, schools and youth jazz ensembles as repertoire, supported by Lancaster Jazz Festival.

There is a budget of £1000 for the commission of the piece, plus fees and travel expenses for workshops and performance.

Artists who wish to apply for the commission should submit a proposal including an outline of their piece (no more than 1000 words), detailing scalability and concepts to lucy@lancasterjazz.com.

The closing date for proposals is Monday 24th February 2020.
